we have some problems with computer crashes during long back testing runs - we would like to build a computer purely for back testing - what are the limiting factors in the computer spec (e.g. memory, proccessor speed)
what would be the ideal spec?

A little more information would help in formulating an answer to your question.
1) What backtesting program are you using
2) What operating system were you using when you had the crashes
3) How much RAM is installed on the machine that crashed
4) Are there any "automatic" programs that might startup\run while you are backtesting such as virus scanners, defragmentation operations, update (via the internet) checkers, etc.
