Guys thanks for the replies thus far.

Ted I will re-read the links you provide. The main thing that interests me is the "process of process", in other words how others go about bringing all the various pieces together.

How Do You Test?

An open question: How do you test? I have spent quite a lot of time thinking about the testing process, and the more testing I do the less I think I know. Using TB is very easy, we can now test our edges, draw fabulous Monte Carlo graphs and so on, but with so many infinite combinations and paramete...

T40,
It's never easy. At least not for me. That's why the topic of self discipline and super human fortitude comes up again and again.
Well said!

RedRock, I absolutely agree. Reducing risk may not be the best plan, and backtesting supports your comment. However, I think there is a big difference in having a drawdown from a profit situation, versus a drawdown from the starting balance. It is much easier to cope with accumulated profits disappe...

Hi LongShot, I don't think I qualify as a veteran trader just yet..not old enough :D Thankfully I don't rely on my trading for income, I have a full time job, but have allocated "risk" capital which I am prepared to lose. With the current lack of sustained trends I am doing a good job of l...

Longshot, I enter with buy or sell stops. My average risk/trade over 22 years and 2024 trades is 0.8% Alerionsailor, I put a 7% risk/trade into my system to see what would happen. The system went bust after just 3 years, with a whopping -131% year. Just don't underestimate drawdown. If you think a 4...

I would second what RedRock says. I only risk 1%/trade, and that is with an "historical" drawdown of around 30%. At present I am in a drawdown period that is as bad as the historical drawdown, due to the lack of any real sustained trends in the markets I follow. Keeping a 1% limit is psych...

From my experience testing combinations of markets in trend type systems, I have found that "less can be more". By which I mean that I try to avoid the highly corrlated markets within each group. I recently deleted HU from my portfolio because of its correlation to CL, and also the SF went...

Hi Seraphim, I have a similar experience when testing futures with different size accounts. The reason my system performs differently is the position sizing. With a starting balance of say $1.5m, I may get a signal to buy 1 or 2 contracts of unleaded gas, based on a small percentage risk, typically ...

Hi Seraphim, Can't help you with 1) or 3), but I use Worden data for US stocks. They have a huge database, and I can't say whether it is the "best", but it certainly is excellent value for money. (www.worden.com). I don't test huge stock numbers, but have found that with 1gig RAM, TB does ...

Hi AFJ, I am trying to understand your problems, really I am, but I just don't get it. You trade a long term system, so I guess you don't trade each market that often. I trade a shorter time frame and can happily go days without putting an order in, as there is no trade approaching a breakout, hence...

Hi, The black swan to which RedRock refers, is what we brits call the DEAD CAT BOUNCE I don't think that is entirely correct. As I understand the defintiions, a dead cat bounce is as you describe, whereas a black swan is an unexpected event or outlier that is not predictable, such as 911. -Turtle40

jkk3131, I had the same experience when I changed from 2.9.0 to 2.9.1. I run 2 identical setups of UA and TBB, and always compare test results when I change either installation. I found small differences between the 2 computers after I had put 2.9.1 on both machines. This showed up in the instument ...

Hi Pakua42, To clarify, TB Turtle and Pro have in built systems which you can tweak the various parameters and see what effect this has. TB Builder lets you write your own "blox" as they call them. You can therefore attempt to do more advanced things. I use Pro (no programming), and have f...

Hi Mike, I have never owned backtesting software before, and have learnt more in the last 3 months, than probably in the last 5 years of "dabling" with various systems. I have now "designed" a system, backtested from 1992 to present, trading 20 markets. Risk is 1%/trade. Gives a ...

Mike168,

Can't speak for other platforms, but I have had TBB Pro for about 3 months now. It is completely stable, (2.10), and in all respects is a joy to use. I have no negative comments about the program at all, and the support from Tim and co. is brilliant.

I would highly recommend it!

Dan, I think the generally accepted "best" supplier for data is CSI, (www.csidata.com). You can have all manner of contract types, including IFGs, (individual futures groups), consisting of the nearest contracts. They are very good and reasonably priced, and the best bit.... the data integ...
