Ryan Jones' Money Management
Hi All, I've read some of Ryan Jones' ideas regarding money management. He seems particularly critical of Fixed Fractional ideas, such as using 2% of account value, etc. I'm not sure I'm understanding his proposal, as it seems very risky early on, yet more conservative as the account grows. I'd like...

EUR/USD
Take a look at the Forex EUR/USD spread. http://www.fxcm.com Starting in May of 2002, and continuing into the present, a VERY nice, sustained trend began around .8900. You would have had little truoble entering this on daily charts using the Turtle rules, and by checking the longer-term trend using ...

trading mutual funds
Gary Smith talks about trading mutual funds due to their very low volatilty, and inmany cases, no transaction costs if you are switching in a family of funds. The drawbcks are that there is no leverage, although in some cases this may actually be an advantage, and the fact that you can not short a m...

Self-Talk
The above posts were excellent! It seems another thing we all fail to be aware of at times, and to varying degrees, is the constant self-talk we all engage in. This is the little voice in our head that has a constant running commentary on everything we think, everything we're doing, and everything t...

Biography, autobiography, and Turtles
Hi Forum Mgmnt, I think that stories like your above lend credibilty to you, the Forum, and Turtle trading. As I've mentioned to you before, people get inundated with claims of expertise form every corner, and on many forums, there is NO way to verify the authenticity of ANY of these people or their...

Hi Robert, Thanks for your offer of help! Unfortunately, I don't have much programming experience at all. I'm certainly willing to learn, but realize this will take time. I may be able to solicit help from those I know, and people in the family with programming experience. I've just not found any pr...

screening programs
Can some of you comment on this, please? I'm interested in a program that can screen stocks, mutual funds, and anything else, based upon preset criteria such as, but not limited to: 1) making new high of X days 2) in (user) defined trading channel of X days 3) other, user-set parameters Since there ...

Diversification
William O'Neill of How to Make Money in Stocks, and Investor's Business Daily fame, has been quoted as saying, "Diversification is a hedge for ignorance." If we assume diversification among intruments and markets to be necessary, some questions that come to mind are: 1) How do you diversif...

Hi George, The original Turtles had a 10 year secrecy agreement with Mr. Dennis, and all but one had enough respect for Mr. Dennis to continue to adhere to this. They finally decided to make the Turle rules available for free in a effort to stop othr's explotation. If you go to http://www.originaltu...

The puzzle, the profits, or both?
I'm interested in a conducting a bit of a poll. What motivates you as a trader? Is it the challenge of solving the puzzle the markets represent, the profits, or some combination? I've personally always been fascinated by the puzzle aspect of trading. Sure, the profits are a motive, but if the puzzle...

This is interesting - did you use the Jesse Livermore system outlined in the little thin book entitled How to Trade in Stocks: The Livermore Formula for Combining Time Element and Price?

Fractal Psychology
Forum Mgmnt, In another thread we discussed the idea of trading multiple time frames using the same system. You pointed out that the trader psychology would be different across various time frames, so this might not work well (please correct me if I misunderstood your point). This got me to thinking...

Spreads
Is there any reason one couldn't trade futures spread positions in the same manner as outright futures positions? My experience with spreads (i.e. long May wheat/short Sep wheat) has been that they are less volatile, the margins are much lower, and the overall risk is reduced. There are undoubtedly ...

Time Frames and Techniques
Thank you all for your responses. Regarding the time frame issue: If we assume the market to be fractal, and that the same price tendencies persist throughout various time frames, wouldn't robust trading techniques work across mulitple time frames? Would this be one possible approach to trading mult...

combining timeframes
Thanks for your comments I found your idea of combining timeframes interesting - I've looked at doing this, too. When I was short-term screen trading, I'd look at the 5 minute time frames for entries, but use the longer time frames, such as 30 and 60 minutes, to get a feel for the "big picture....

Short-Term vs Long-Term Trading
It would seem that the long-term trading approach would be "easier" on a trader in terms of the stress involved in making trading decisions. My experience has mostly been with short-term trading methods, and I found these to be very stressful due to the need to react almost instantaneously...
