I use RSI(21) in this manner: When the indicator is running along the 50 line, it just confirms for me that the stock is consolidating. Anything above 50 lets me know the stock is closing higher. I don't use it for OS/OB, turning points or trend strength. But I think the question you need to ask you...

The problem you're describing is whipsaw or false breakouts, an inherent problem with MA crossovers. Your solution is to use wide parameters for the MAs, but I suggest that you keep the MAs short and instead change your trading timeframe down. It's a simple thought, really. Conversely, if the signal was not part of a proven system, I'd let it slide, unless this was happening all the time. I'd let it slide under the belief that changing my otherwise profitable method to capture this one move might render my method less profitable all in all through its many other trades...
