Learning VB.NET

Hi Guys, Thanks for all your help in making my decision. I ordered some C++ and VB.net books, and have been working through the VB.net tutorials. I have to say, coming from the old school style of programming--here is my resume: Commodore basic (Vic 20 with a whopping 5k of RAM) Apple Basic (Yes, th...

I found that if you write an application in QuantStudio, you could not share or sell the software with others, unless they have quantstudio. They don't provide the source code, unless you pay thousands (from what I hear, upper thousands) of dollars. I don't like limitations, and I learned that the h...

I looked more carefully at smart quant, and I decided that it introduces other limitations.

It still appears that the scratch built approach is the way to go.

Does anyone know of somthing similar for VB.net, or any .net language ?

Sir G, THank you for the advice, it is much appreciated. I agree, the difference between VB.net and C++.net is mostly a moot point. I have Visual Studio, the full developer's version, so it came with everything. Its simply a matter of learning and practice for me. I considered all the the things you...

I can shed a little light. I learned Fortran back in 1991 (FORMula TRANslation). I am currently learning VB.net, and intend to learn some C++.net. VB is easier, and is not case sensitve like C++ Imagine writing code, like in Tradestation easy language where "Plot" was valid, but "plot...

No problem posting my questions, thank you for replying. Here are the few VB "hick-up" I ran into: - Code Size limitations - DLL Support was difficult at the time I used it VB6 - No real CLASS support and difficulties to integrate C++ libraries - Speed I was under the impression that VB.NE...

you said: "that, amongst other measures, have low correlations. " You are assuming that low correlations will continue into the future, or said another way, you are assuming that the past will be repeated in the future. My belief is that this is a mistake to assume that the past will repea...

I've also sometimes thought that writing an autobiography is a fairly self-centered or egotistical act. At the same, I admit that I'll eventually do that. Does that make me egotistical? Hmmm... I'll probably write a book on trading soon, I've started on but I'm not ready to finish it yet. I think t...

I just have some comments. "in classical portfolio management, managers would attempt to diversify across many investment vehicles with low correlation (0 to -1)" -1 means perfectly negatively correlated, or when one goes up, the other goes down. I think you mean -1/2 or more to +1/2 or le...

I agree that correlations change between markets. They sometimes correlate, they sometimes do not. That is why I beleive in trading as many markets as my account will allow, even some markets that are correlated now, as well as markets that are not correlated now (but could be in the future). You ne...

I cannot speak for others, I will give you my opinions and beliefs: I believe market selection is more of a discretionary process. I believe in diversification in independent markets. Short term traders have a much harder time doing this. I am longer term. I believe much of portfolio selection is a ...
