Al,

Re-optimize on the day that human nature changes immutably and not before.

suspect you'll find that single set of parameters tuned across all the markets will perform better in the out-of-sample testing than the market-optimized parameters. I've done some of this kind of testing and that's what I've found. I've also heard of some similar testing done with some commerciall...

I forgot to mention that you can bet on virtually any instrument, whether it be IR's, Currencies, Bullion, Commodities or Equities using the SpreadBetters.

Also, in UK, the wins are tax free.

Hi Al, SpreadBets are just another vehicle for trading instruments. You are betting whether the price will advance or decline.....as always. Margin requirements for the SpreadBetters are very low...for stocks its 5%. For the FTSE100 I thing it is £100 per point bet. Check out www.deal4free.com I th...

I guess that if Leaps just gave you extra leverage for Stocks then you might as well use SpreadBetters where the margin requirement is 5%. The beauty of the SpreadBetters is that you are guaranteed your exit price for as much as you want to sell/buy because you are betting on the price and not price...

Dear All, Does anyone know of a product out there that would allow me to write a bespoke trading program, so the product language must be sufficiently well defined to cope with 2 dimensional arrays and standard control structures such as For loops and If statements, that once written, the program ca...

Interesting, because i recall c.f. stated that some of the people in the TT program had the same beliefs. They didnt trust the rules that Richard gave them. When I met c.f. last October in St Thomas, I told him that the reason he was able to trade the rules was that "he had taken ownership of ...

By misinterpret, does that mean not be able to follow? By misinterpret, I mean that they thought that the rules worked in a different way, than they actually did. I had the same problem myself. From the TT manual, it really is difficult to clear away all of the noise, in order to understand the rul...

The ones who failed, misinterpreted the rules, in the same way I did, for the last 2 years. TT was specifically about a bet, between Eckhardt and Dennis, that trading could be taught. There is no emotion in trading. c.f. told me himself, that he has a computer that can put on, in excess of 4000 trad...

Kiwi, I want freedom, thats all! It doesn't cost much for me, because whilst I would love another Mercedes SLK and a Ferrari 360 Spyder, I really want to sit on a beach and be able to chill for the rest of my life. 3K GBP net pcm (index linked) for the rest of my life, would do nicely! Sir G, Reasonably good answer - many thanks! Severe weakness in your argument though....and I partly take responsibility for it. There is one huge and fundamental difference between Pop Idol and trading. The Pop Idols have innate talent that cannot be harnessed, measured, quantified or bottled. In s...

Systems, merit and philosophy

I throw a question out to the readers.... At what stage in a persons development would you consider they merit professional help? For example, in Pop (American) Idol, I see young wannabe's strutting their stuff in the hope of getting a chance to be taken on by the professionals, so that their raw ta...

Howard, Thanks for your response. Before I start digging around, you wouldn't happen to know where I could get examples of code (any language but Basic would be good) for writing my own Span calculation modules, would you? Can the calculations be derived, purely from historic price data? I am curren...

Margin calculations

Mornin all! Does anyone know how the futures exchanges calculate margin requirement per contract? I know that they base it on volatility, but do you know if the calculation is entirely objective and something we can code or is it a case of exchange "finger in the air" mechanics? Thanks in ...

If you programmed a dynamic system and it has more than 7-10 parameters, I would bet that it would not be very robust. Thinking about it, I'm trying to achieve "regression to the mean", in recent history, time. If I could achieve this, it would go a long way to stabilising the system. I d...

How many parameters are we talking about? How many do you know are mutually exclusive in the way they interact with the others? There are 6 interacting indicators. But they can all be bounded by realistic settings so.........maybe its not that difficult..... (it was a 3-d graphic space) Seykota lik...

And I was hoping that this thread would result in a discussion to distill the main pillars of trading plan design and ...

use parameters that have a range for optimization Ideally, you need to put some kind of intelligence into this search, rather than a tour de force search of all the values....I wonder..... The search is slightly bounded, in that you will know that many of the parameter settings are not relevant. Fo...
