As far as tick data goes, you might want to check out opentick (http://www.opentick.com/) I've used it very briefly and can say that you'll need to scrub it yourself, but the price is right. Can't comment on the quality as i havent compared it to any other sources, but it would probably be fine for ...

i screen for increases in volume. Often times stocks on the move experience big changes in average volume.
